Intelligence committee wants national fuel stocks boosted to protect national security
ABC News, 16 March 2018
Parliament’s national security committee wants Australia’s low fuel supplies bolstered within six months to protect national security.
After the closure of a number of Australia’s oil refineries, most of the nation’s fuel is now imported, with half of it coming through the South China Sea.
According to the International Energy Agency, Australia would run out of oil in just 49 days if imports were blocked or withheld.
The intelligence committee says the situation makes Australia vulnerable and must be addressed.
